How to engage the students in learning, with the web 2.0 tools and in Second Life, by John Miller

Creating Engaging and Interactive Online Nursing, Medical, and other Courses

http://jsvavoom.blogspot.com/2008/11/creating-online-nursing-medical-and.html

.fullpost{display:inline;}
For my college courses, I use Articulate Presenter, Crossword Compiler, and Jeopardy to engage the students in learning with games, as well as to provide slides with audio. The web 2.0 tools besides a learning management system (Blackboard, Angel) include Google Calendar, Docs, Talk, Sites, Video Chat, Blogger, del.icio.us, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Skype, ooVoo, Camtasia and others.

The virtual world of Second Life is extensively used for constructivism activities using Archipelis and tools in world. Community in the online world is encouraged with avatar creation, in world classes, and field trips to events in Second Life. Animations are imported into Second Life with Poser, sounds with Audacity, and images with Gimp or Photoshop. Students interact with virtual patients, making critical decisions for assessment, communication and treatment. Support groups in Second Life are numerous and interaction with them is critical for understanding the complexities for those accessing the medical system with major and long term health issues. Virtual Ability and SL Healthy have more information about these activities.

My teaching career has spanned 27 years in nursing, with more than eight years teaching online. For five years I was the faculty trainer for all disciplines in online teaching at a college.

If you need assistance in creating interactive and engaging online courses for nursing, other medical areas, or other disciplines, contact me at http://muvers.org.

AMIA Panel Discussion on Virtual Worlds

AMIA Panel Discussion on Virtual Worlds Takes Place in RL and SL

http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-149486

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 a panel session of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) was held simultaneously in rl and sl. The title of the session was “A Virtual World as a Healthcare Information Platform” and the participants included moderator DanielS Cisco Systems (rl Danny Sands from Cisco Systems), Pathfinder Linden (rl John Lester, Linden Lab), Cooksbranch Chowderhead (rl Daniel Hoch, Massachussetts General Hospital), Deep Semaphore (rl Rameshsharma Ramloll, Idaho State University), Lancelot Spitteler (rl James Kinross, Imperial College London) and Davee Commerce ( rl David Taylor, Imperial College London).
DanielS Cisco Systems began the session by introducing the panel members and giving an overview of the potential ways that Second Life can be used by those in the business, healthcare and social science fields. Cisco sponsored this panel discussion; the first of its kind (discussing virtual worlds in rl and sl simultaneously) at AMIA. Previously, Cisco was involved in another sl/rl presentation, this time at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meetings of February, 2008, when the Virtual Palomar Hospital sim was introduced. (see http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-55637
Pathfinder Linden was the first panel member to speak. He is Linden Lab’s Boston Operations Director, having joined Linden Lab in 2005, bringing experience in online community building, healthcare and education to his position. He described virtual worlds and explained that the great challenge is to help people discover the potential uses of this new technology, especially in the areas mentioned.
Cooksbranch Chowderhead (rl Daniel Hoch) was the next to make a presentation. Hoch is a neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital who has been working on a study in which Second Life is used as an alternate way to provide healthcare delivery. A technique already taught in rl was chosen for the study, the Relaxation Response, a stress reduction therapy first described by Dr. Herbert Benson and designed by the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine. The teaching of the Relaxation Response was adapted for Second Life and three groups of participants followed the eight week course. Two of the groups have recently completed the program and the results are being evaluated.
Following Cooksbranch Chowderhead , Deep Semaphore (rl Rameshsharma Ramloll of Idaho State University) showed a video of a simulation for emergency training (the title is “Exploring Emergency Preparedness Training in a Virtual Environment: Highlights from a Pandemic Influenza Triage Exercise”) that was done in Second Life. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1doVBFl9fs, also see http://play2train.org) The immersive quality of Second Life lends itself to doing this kind of work. As well the organization of these kinds of exercises, which involve large numbers of people working in different disciplines, can be easier than in rl.
The final speaker was Lancelot Spitteler (rl James Kinross) from Imperial College London. Imperial College London, along with the National Physical Laboratory, have created a virtual hospital in Second Life (the Second Health Hospital) in accordance with “Healthcare for London: A Framework for Action”. This hospital allows people to experience the recommendations set forth in “Healthcare for London: A Framework for Action” in a tangible way. Visitors also have the opportunity to leave comments that could be utilized in the creation of rl healthcare services in London. Imperial College London also has a training hospital in Second Life where students can learn to examine patients in a respiratory care unit.
James Kinross spoke about how Second Life can and has been used so far. He talked about both the illusion of interaction that can be felt in Second Life and that these interactions can be captured and analyzed. Kinross’s avatar Lancelot Spitteler actually got up out of his seat on the panel and entered into the audience area, greeting avatars who were seated there and hopefully demonstrating to the session participants in rl just how real the feeling in sl can be. Convincing people who have not been in Second Life of the intensity and reality of the experience is probably one of the most difficult things to do.
Finally Davee Commerce, also of Imperial College Hospital, took the audience on a tour of an operating room which had been set up to help students learn procedures, such as scrubbing up. It was an interesting experience because many of the objects in the room were set up to warn you if you were doing something wrong. For instance, I bumped into an object in the room, a cart, I think, and was told by the object that I had done so.
This AMIA panel discussion illustrated many different aspects of the use of Second Life. The actual presentation itself was made available to those who could not attend the meeting in person. Many different healthcare related uses were also demonstrated: teaching patients who might not be able to get to the hospital easily (demonstrated by the teaching of the Relaxation Response), training of large numbers of healthcare professionals and emergency responders to react to emergency situations ( the video shown by Ramesh Ramloll on the emergency response to the flu epidemic), the ability to help form healthcare policy (Second Health Hospital) and training of medical students (Imperial College London). The use of virtual worlds such as Second Life can help save healthcare systems time and money, something of great importance in this period of increasingly costly healthcare. for a description of a visit to the virtual hospital)

Second Life for Paramedic Students

First Paramedic Course To Use Second Life

October 16th, 2008 - Posted in Health care, Nursing Information

You receive an emergency call. A female has collapsed in the street. You arrive outside the nightclub to find a young female slumped against a wall. There is no other bystander in the area and the caller has left the scene. As you approach the patient you notice she is singing in a slurred fashion. What should you do?

Paramedic students studying at the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, a partnership between St George’s, University of London and Kingston University, can find the answer using Second Life, an internet-based virtual world.

Healthcare Support Groups in Online Virtual Worlds, by john-norris.net

Online Support Group’s Introduction to Virtual Worlds

http://john-norris.net/2008/09/16/online-support-groups-introduction-to-virtual-worlds/

September 16th, 2008

If you run a healthcare support group online (be that a message board, forum, IRC, etc…) and are wondering about jumping into virtual worlds, I hope the following paper is helpful.

If you are running a face to face healthcare support group and wonder about doing so in a virtual world, this paper may also be helpful. However, there are some general things about online support I do not address.

If you are looking for an introduction to the basics of Second Life, this is really not the paper for you. But if you want to know how groups function without going into Second Life, this paper may be a good start.

How Can Second Life Be Used by the Visually Impaired

http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-can-second-life-be-used-by-visually.html

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

People with special needs and learning differences are near and dear to my heart, so this is one that has to be passed along.

Whether or not Second Life is the platform of our future, if you’re attending conferences like NECC and listening to academicians, 3D virtual worlds USED WELL can reach kids who we’re struggling to reach everywhere.

Today, this is what is happening:

Louise Later (SL), who is legally blind, will be with us to discuss how Second Life is used by the visually impaired. She will demonstrate two scripted objects currently under development designed specifically for the visually impaired: a mobility cane and a guide dog, and she will also talk about how EVA (an screen readin g tool) benefits visually impaired users, and her work with Virtual Ability, a Colorado-based startup developing products to assist people with different type of disabilities to utilize Second Life.

The medical community is trying to find real-life benefits from the virtual reality of Second Life

Parallel universe: Entering an online 3-D world
The medical community is trying to find real-life benefits from the virtual reality of Second Life.

By Pamela Lewis Dolan, AMNews staff. Sept. 8, 2008.

In Second Life, a computer world where just about anything goes, several physicians and health care professionals are finding that “anything” can include work that makes real life easier for themselves, their colleagues and their patients.

But in a world void of the laws and protections governing real-life medical professionals, taking advantage of the opportunities a virtual world offers comes with risks.

“There’s more to it than ‘Hey, this is a very cool application,’ ” said Maurice Ramirez, DO, PhD, president and founder of the Orlando, Fla., consulting firm High Alert. “Done right, this could solve a myriad of problems. Done wrong, it is a security nightmare to not only patients but to doctors.”

Reporter Pamela Lewis Dolan crossed between real life and virtual life for this story on the medical-related activity in the online 3-D world inhabited by millions since San Francisco-based Linden Lab launched Second Life in 2003 (www.secondlife.com).

Passages in italics indicate Dolan is navigating Second Life as Annastasia Blaisdale, her avatar, or online character. Straight type represents Dolan writing as herself. In both worlds, everyone to whom Dolan — or Blaisdale — spoke was aware of her real name and her status as an AMNews staff reporter.

If You Think Second Life is over, IBM does't, and embrace OpenSim, too

IBM Drinks Second Life Kool-Aid, Makes More For Lotus Users (IBM)

|

Think Second Life is over? IBM doesn’t. Yesterday Big Blue announced it was integrating support for Second Life (and a few other virtual world platforms) into its Lotus Sametime corporate instant-messaging product.

Why? IBM thinks if an engineer has to walk a customer through replacing a part on a computer server, the two can meet in Second Life and together manipulate a 3D model. Or, Sametime users could collaborate in a virtual world to review a Powerpoint presentation as avatars, which is better and easier than old-fashioned text IM or the telephone because… well… we’re not sure either.

The push to integrate Lotus Sametime with Second Life is the latest move in IBM’s full-throttle embrace of virtual worlds. The company has been working closely with Second Life parent company Linden Lab to develop a set of protocols that allow avatars to move between virtual worlds, and became the first company to host private Second Life regions for internal use.

ABSTRACT
The author provides a critical overview of three-dimensional (3-D) virtual worlds and “serious gaming” that are currently being developed and used in healthcare professional education and medicine. The relevance of this e-learning innovation for teaching students and professionals is debatable and variables influencing adoption, such as increased knowledge, self-directed learning, and peer collaboration, by academics, healthcare professionals, and business executives are examined while looking at various Web 2.0/3.0 applications. There is a need for more empirical research in order to unearth the pedagogical outcomes and advantages associated with this e-learning technology. A brief description of Roger’s Diffusion of Innovations Theory and Siemens’ Connectivism Theory for today’s learners is presented as potential underlying pedagogical tenets to support the use of virtual 3-D learning environments in higher education and healthcare.

An unambiguous gesture of Olympic spirit and friendship: a handshake. Join in, and watch it circle the globe

As the Beijing Olympics begin, the world looks on with mixed emotions. It's a moment which should bring us closer together, and Chinese citizens deserve their excitement -- but the Chinese government still hasn't opened meaningful dialogue with the Dalai Lama, or changed its stance on Burma, Darfur and other pressing issues.

Even worse, extremists in China are promoting the view that Olympic activism like ours is anti-Chinese. We can't stay silent, but we also can't let our efforts be abused to divide people. So what can we do? The answer comes from the Dalai Lama himself, in an unambiguous gesture of Olympic spirit and friendship: a handshake.

It began in London, passed hand to hand by thousands of us -- now the handshake has gone online, and is criss-crossing the globe on its way to Beijing. All of us can join, Chinese and non-Chinese, and it comes with a promise: to hold ALL our governments accountable where they fall short, in Tibet, Iraq, Burma or beyond. We'll deliver our message in a bold media campaign in Hong Kong and around the world: Click below to see how the Olympic handshake started, sign up to join in, and watch it circle the globe --

http://www.avaaz.org/en/handshake

The worldwide outcry has produced a little progress, but much resistance from Chinese officials so far. If we are to see advances not setbacks after the Games, we need to show both that our voices will never fall silent, and that our challenge is a positive one.

We have one last chance to reclaim the spirit of the Olympics, with the message of friendship and dialogue we share with the Dalai Lama. The more people join the global handshake, the more powerful our message will be when it hits the Chinese and international media. So let's forward this email on, encouraging everyone to join in. "One World, One Dream" is an ideal that's bigger than the Olympics -- it's time for citizens around the world to take it back.

With hope and respect,

Paul, Ricken, Ben, Milena, Graziela, Iain, Pascal, Veronique and the whole Avaaz team

PS For a report on Avaaz's campaigning so far, see:
https://secure.avaaz.org/en/report_back_2

In a representative survey of us from all over the world, 92% of respondents recommended we pursue this handshake instead of the often-suggested boycott -- there's a strong consensus that this is the way to get our message across right now.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present paper is to describe the role played by three-dimensional (3-D) virtual worlds in eHealth applications, addressing some potential advantages and issues related to the use of this emerging medium in clinical practice. Due to the enormous diffusion of the World Wide Web (WWW), telepsychology, and telehealth in general, have become accepted and validated methods for the treatment of many different health care concerns. The introduction of the Web 2.0 has facilitated the development of new forms of collaborative interaction between multiple users based on 3-D virtual worlds. This paper describes the development and implementation of a form of tailored immersive e-therapy called p-health whose key factor is interreality, that is, the creation of a hybrid augmented experience merging physical and virtual worlds. We suggest that compared with conventional telehealth applications such as emails, chat, and videoconferences, the interaction between real and 3-D virtual worlds may convey greater feelings of presence, facilitate the clinical communication process, positively influence group processes and cohesiveness in group-based therapies, and foster higher levels of interpersonal trust between therapists and patients. However, challenges related to the potentially addictive nature of such virtual worlds and questions related to privacy and personal safety will also be discussed.

Openlife Founders and Ethics in Opensource Grids (vs Lindens) and my Openlife Feed-Back

I just posted this message here:

http://www.openlifegrid.com/LearningCenter/Forums/tabid/54/forumid/3/postid/2269/scope/posts/Default.aspx

Hello, I was an Openlife Founder, since 02/15/2008, at least untill this yesterday message, I got from OpenlifeGrid.com

Your user account at Openlife Grid has been recently updated to restrict access to the following Openlife Role:

Role: Foundation Resident
Description: Openlife Foundation Resident Subscription.
These residents are Pioneers of the Openlife Grid owning a region of the mainland in the Foundation Resident Land Release.

Thank you, we appreciate your support...
Openlife Grid

What does it mean? I asked...

You probably received this email, as you are no longer hold a region in world. So it takes your Foundation Resident Status away...

That was the answer.

It's true! One month ago I paid my last 75$ (90+45+75 = 210$, now for a little, very little more, you become a true founder - for the same period !)

and I ABANDONED my region, Coffee/Campanella.

Yes, so, I didn't rent it, I didn't sell it. I consider myself someone that wanted to contribute to the foundation of an opensource grid, so...

My feed-back: Months of silence

About the big promises of the beguinning, about a lot of very good intentions expressed in so many posts on this forums (on how to use the grid, on how to share experiences, on how to let people walk, run, fly, sail too, from region to region), about the continuously updating of the servers, the openlifegrid.com web server included, (btw I tried 3 times to login here, today, before to success)

so about, also, how, when, and where to pay tiers!

No more mails, as at the beguinning, just some messages somewhere, or in the chat.

So

no mind if the grid was down, expecially when you'd like to show it to friends you spammed about in forums, blogs and emails (meantime, Lindens travel from LL to IBM opensource grid, maybe have they to book their visit some weeks before?)

no mind if, as a founder, I contributed, as many, many, many other to buy expensive hardware and pay hours and hours of (silent) work of the Openlifegrid.com

no mind if also when I wrote about my difficulty to continue to support this grid that silent way, I didn't got any answer

no mind it the same happened when I decided to definitely abandon my region

no mind if now the same region is sold for a very smaller amount, and tiers too are smaller than before

no mind of a lot of other little details

No mind.

But, the meaning of the word founder (I'm not anglophone, but I have some dictionaries) should be 'a guy that contributed to found, at the beguinning, now and later in the future - the time is past)

So, what minds is that I'm very hurted that a short message can delete me as .. such!

If this is the ethics of an opensource grid, I'm very sorry that this could happen. Since I still believe to the strong role of the Open Source (and LL too, as everyone can read on their blogs :D )

So

my feed-back is of a great enthusiasm, I found here, a great respect for the openlifegrid.com creator and owner, and, also, an increasing big flop

of all of this.

Maybe the openlife.com business is very fine, increasing and ok.

I'm not interested on.

So, maybe it's also better that my foundership will be soon forgotten. For ME, I mean.

Well, good bye to all people here :))

(I'll post this message on my 2 readers blog, http://www.centromimir.com )

Forgive my poor English :)

Bye :))))))))

HealthMap un nuovo servizio interattivo disponibile su Internet che mostra la diffusione delle epidemie

Google lancia HealthMap

http://www.corriere.it/salute/08_luglio_14/

HealthMap In the News:

About HealthMap

HealthMap brings together disparate data sources to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. This freely available Web site integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization). Through an automated text processing system, the data is aggregated by disease and displayed by location for user-friendly access to the original alert. HealthMap provides a jumping-off point for real-time information on emerging infectious diseases and has particular interest for public health officials and international travelers.

Second Life offers healing. Therapeutic options for users

… A lot of altruism, free giving, plenty of warnings. Isn’t there any digital snake oil here? No fake therapists?

One in-world psychologist, Dr. Craig Kerley from Georgia, who was profiled on CBS’s “Early Show,” has hung his shingle for “cybertherapy” at $90 per hour. This work, he says, “can be valuable for those who have limited choices in their geographical region, have limited time to drive to regular in-person appointments, have limited mobility, and have limitations in their lifestyle that make traveling to a brick and mortar office difficult.”

Still, Dr. Peter Yellowlees, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at UC Davis and a specialist in virtual worlds, cautions about therapy in Second Life, even with professionals. He advises using it only as “a potential adjunct to face-to-face therapy,” and to “use passwords or other cues in Second Life to make sure you’re talking to the right person” - the real therapist, not scammers posing as one.

Yellowlees uses Second Life as a teaching tool, not for therapy. His Virtual Hallucinations sim gives “the lived experience of schizophrenia - to hear voices and see visions” so his students (and the rest of us) can “get inside the head, just a bit, of someone who’s psychotic.”

It certainly sparked empathy in me, much more richly than a mere clinical description of the disorder would have done.

Empathy: There’s that word again, an odd one to associate with impersonal bytes and modems, but the right one. Second Life is a hot, humming thing of wire and light, a “server” - spiritual teachers would like the metaphor - that can carry community and genuine human sympathy…

(Aggiunto: 15 maggio 2008)

Avatar and Email-based Therapy

Il dr. Craig Kerley, in arte Kamenev - D. Craig Kerley, Psy.D.

What is Cybertherapy?

Cybertherapy is the use of computer technology to provide mental health services which are
qualitatively different than those provided in traditional in-person therapeutic experiences. In
cybertherapy, a mental health professional utilizes new forms of communication, made possible by
computer and internet technology; to offer services that until recently were not available. While this
approach is cutting-edge, it is based on the time-tested principles of the helping professions. However,
it provides the client with methods of seeking assistance that may either be uncomfortable or physically
impossible in traditional face-to-face therapeutic models.

While in-person psychotherapy is often the method of choice, the advantages of a cybertherapeutic
approach are unique and powerful. This approach can offer mental health services to those who have
limited choices in their geographical region, have limited time to drive to regular in-person
appointments, have limited mobility, and have limitations in their lifestyle that make traveling to a
brick and mortar office difficult...
