Midday, 21MAR08 (Sydney):

The latest reports from Tibet today are that thousands of troops are moving into Tibet and the bordering Chinese provinces in what is feared to be the first stage of a Tianenmen Sq.-style repression.

Activist groups worldwide have pleaded with the UN to intervene but, as a permanent member of the UN, China can veto any action proposed by that body.

Now, concerned citizens around the world are asking the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to apply pressure on the Chinese authorities. It is hoped that China (host of this years Olympic Games) will be more sensitive to condemnations from nations that are planning to participate in the Olympics.
Countries with strong trade links to China are also being asked to intervene and remind China that these actions could damage their very profitable ‘Made In China’ brands.

After decades of repression, Tibetans are crying out to the world for freedom and independence.
China’s leaders are, at this very moment, making a crucial choice between escalating the brutality or dialogue that could determine the future of Tibet and China.

We can have an affect on this historic choice by signing an online petition that is aiming for one million signatures.

Right now (at 6pm 20MAR08 in Second Life) there are 461,000 signatures on that petition.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha sempre dimostrato un vivo interesse per la scienza e per il dialogo fra il Buddhismo e l’occidente. Per favorire questa ricerca due occidentali interessati al Buddismo, il businessman Adam Engle e il neuroscienziato Francisco Varela, hanno fin dal 1987 promosso una serie di incontri fra gruppi di scienziati e Sua Santità, intesi a mettere a confronto le prospettive della scienza buddista e di quella occidentale su argoenti di particolare interesse, come ad esempio la cosmologia o le emozioni.
Gli scienziati invitati agli incontri non sono necessariamente buddisti, ma vengono scelti in base alla loro competenza riguardo alla materia trattata e alla loro disponibilità a confrontarsi con una visione molto diversa da quella usuale in occidente.
La maggior parte degli incontri, organizzati a cadenza biennale, si è svolta nella residenza privata del Dalai Lama a Dharamsala, in India. Gli incontri, tranne l’undicesimo, hanno avuto natura strettamente privata; questo ha consentito agli invitati di lavorare in una atmosfera rilassata e spontanea. Le sessioni vengono tuttavia registrate, e generalmente ne viene pubblicato un ampio resoconto, che in alcuni casi è disponibile anche in italiano.
Nel futuro, agli incontri riservati verranno affiancati anche altri aperti al pubblico; il prossimo si intitolerà “Investigare la mente II”, ed è in programma per il 2005 a Bethesda, nel Maryland (USA).

Whereas the likes of the hit '80s board game Dungeons and Dragons and the Internet's World of Warcraft provided fantasy for gamers, Second Life creeps much closer to reality. At once a 3-D social networking site, a place for would-be entrepreneurs to do business (and make real money), and a forum for conducting scientific and medical research, it has now attracted the attention of multinational corporations seizing the opportunity to translate virtual money into cold cash. As a result, Second Life is blurring the boundaries between the virtual world and the real one.

China's answer to Second Life is in the works, but facescensors and other hurdles its American rival never will.

With a launch planned for the end of the year, HiPiHi appears to be on track to becoming the first homegrown Chinese competitor to Second Life, the virtual world that's all the rage in the United States. HiPiHi's 38-year-old CEO and founder, Xu Hui, has ambitious goals: he plans to sign up 100,000 users in the first three months. Then he wants to branch out through partnerships with U.S., Japanese and other foreign firms to establish discrete virtual "continents." Ultimately, he sees a handful of virtual worlds, including HiPiHi and Second Life, linked up in one vast universe. "We're on the same road to a dream—virtual worlds are just beginning," says Xu.

Envision This: Mathematicians Design Invisible Tunnel

Call it Harry Potter's invisible sleeve. New calculations show how to make an electromagnetic "wormhole"—a tube that is invisible from the sides but allows light to shine down the center.

The concept is a twist on a spherical cloak of invisibility proposed last year. Such a device would be made of metamaterial, a thicket of metal rings or other shapes that bends light in funny ways. A hollow shell of metamaterial could in principle channel light around its inner space without slowing the light down, rendering that hidey-hole invisible to the outside world.
